Climate Change Minister celebrates expansion at ENER-G

Climate Change Minister Greg Barker has opened a £2 million extension to the global headquarters of low carbon technology group ENER-G in Salford, Greater Manchester, and celebrated news that the company will create 100 new jobs in 2011.

Over the past ten years, the international manufacturing and engineering group has increased the size of its workforce from 75 to more than 760 people worldwide, with 560 of them based in the UK.

Through its partnerships with schools, colleges and universities ENER-G is helping to develop tomorrow’s talent, training 20 young people on its apprenticeship scheme and new graduate development programme.

The new building has doubled ENER-G’s office space and will release additional space for manufacturing low carbon and renewable technologies, including biogas generation and combined heat and power systems (CHP).

The company also announced immediate plans to increase investment in excess of £0.25 million in its manufacturing facility in Salford. This is the culmination of a three year manufacturing expansion programme that will enable the business to double its manufacturing output during 2011 from 2008 levels.

ENER-G’s technologies provide total carbon savings of five million tonnes per year for its customers, equivalent to the environmental benefit of 500 million trees.

Turnover grew 34% last year to £130 million, 47% of which was generated by export sales. This is in line with the company’s year-on-year growth profile of 30% for the last ten years. ENER-G has operating companies, joint ventures and partnerships in 18 countries, including the UK, Hungary, the Netherlands, Romania, Lithuania, Italy, Norway, Poland, South Africa, Mexico and Spain, with partners in Canada and across Western and Eastern Europe.

Greg Barker said: “I’m extremely pleased to announce the £2 million expansion to ENER-G and to celebrate the new jobs that will come with that investment. These are still challenging times for the whole economy but as the recovery really starts to grow, Salford is fast becoming a green beacon of the Northwest by capitalising on a move to a low carbon economy.

“I’m impressed by the forward thinking nature of businesses here which are developing the technologies of the future but I also want to find out what challenges still exist for those yet to benefit. I’m talking to local businesses to find ways to unlock investment. We’re serious about being the greenest government ever and unlocking low green growth in all parts Britain.”

Tim Scott, chairman of ENER-G, said: “We are delighted to announce the creation of more skilled jobs, and extremely proud of our growth and achievements. Engineering and manufacturing businesses like ours make a rich contribution to UK PLC. Continued government support for sustainable energy is critical to building the new low carbon economy in which we operate and we were very pleased to have an opportunity to celebrate our success with the Minister and to discuss policies that can drive growth in the sector.”

Nick Storer, Chief Executive at Envirolink Northwest, the leading support company for the growth of the low carbon and environmental goods and services sector in the Northwest, said: “When we were approached by The Department of Energy and Climate Change to facilitate a meeting with a successful Northwest based company in the low carbon sector we were delighted to help. Opportunities such as these enable us to showcase the region’s achievements on a national level, and ENER-G is a good example of this success. The presence of broader supply chain companies from the region allowed the Minister to gain a snap shot of the sector and emphasised the importance of the Northwest and the low carbon sector as key contributors to the overall growth of the UK’s economy.”

ENER-G develops, manufactures, delivers, finances and maintains energy efficient and renewable solutions. In addition to CHP units and biogas systems, these include geothermal energy, heat pumps, efficient lighting, controls, metering, billing and data solutions, and new generation energy from waste. The company has more installed CHP systems across the UK and Europe than any other supplier, including installations in Buckingham Palace, hospitals, hotels, leisure centres, government offices, supermarkets, factories and other buildings worldwide.

The company was founded in 1997 through the acquisition of Manchester’s first university spinout business Combined Power Systems. ENER-G was a recent winner in the National Business Awards, becoming 3i Private Business of the Year.

Greater Manchester LEP calls to business leaders

Greater Manchester business leaders are being invited to join the new Greater Manchester Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP).

The government approved the establishment of the private sector-led LEP last October and since then a shadow LEP has been in place to prepare for the formation of the new body in April.

LEPs are designed to support business and local authorities to grow the local private sector, tackle major barriers to growth and develop shared strategies for the local economy to increase job creation. The membership of the body is expected to be a mix of public and private sector figures.

Shadow LEP chair John Early said: “Central government has made it clear that it considers LEPs to be at the heart of regional growth. This is your opportunity to have an influential role in the economic success of the city region at the heart of the decision-making process.”

Lord Peter Smith, chair of Association of Greater Manchester Authorities (AGMA), said: “One of the reasons for Manchester’s success in recent years has been the strong partnership between the public and private sectors.

“By joining the LEP, business leaders in the city region can play a key part in shaping and strengthening that relationship in the months and years to come.”

The recruitment process will be an open one to ensure that everyone who believes they can make a contribution will have the opportunity to do so.

The LEP will comprise one non-local authority chair, eight other non-local authority representatives and up to four AGMA representatives. AGMA is seeking to appoint individuals from the private sector from a broad range of industries, as well as potentially individuals from other sectors -for example higher and further education and the voluntary sector – who can demonstrate a strong understanding of the needs and requirements for growing Greater Manchester’s economic base.

Appointees will sit on the LEP as individuals and will not be there to represent the views of their company, industry or representative body.

For more information about what the role entails, the application process and contact details for further inquiries, visit www.gmleprecruitment.com

The closing date for applications is 12 noon on Monday 21 February.

Krispy Kreme selects Manchester as location for first UK factory

Leading doughnut company Krispy Kreme UK has selected Heywood Distribution Park for its first specific manufacturing unit in the UK.

The move to Heywood Distribution Park is the latest stage of the company’s rapid expansion and the new facility will enable it to expand its presence across the Northwest. The unit will house a manufacturing line and processing kitchen with the ability to produce 3,000 doughnuts an hour.

Rob Hunt, Chief Financial Officer at Krispy Kreme UK, said: “We looked at a number of industrial parks across the Northwest but Heywood proved to be the perfect location for us, not only because of its fantastic transport links but also because it is brand new and therefore, highly suitable for food grade use. This move is the next step for our expansion plans to double the number of stores in the next five years”

Jane Leedham, Leasing Manager at Heywood Distribution Park, said: “We are extremely pleased that Krispy Kreme chose Heywood Distribution Park for its new UK manufacturing facility, especially as this will be the first of its kind in the country. Ground breaking at Salford’s Greengate

A ground-breaking ceremony has been held to mark the regeneration of Greengate in Salford.

The project will transform the derelict brownfield site into a new commercial and residential development for the city, bringing between £400 million and £450 million of private investment and 4,500 new jobs.

The project is being delivered by Salford City Council and is the result of a partnership between Central Salford Urban Regeneration Company, Northwest Development Agency (NWDA) and European Regional Development Fund (ERDF). It has been designed by Leeds based architects Whitelaw Turkington and the internationally renowned engineers, Arup.

The construction work will be carried out by Carillion, who will have the first phase, including a public space, a footbridge linking the development to Manchester, water fountains and architectural sculptures, completed by April 2012.

Speaking at the launch, John Merry CBE, leader of Salford City Council, said: “The redevelopment of this site will really unlock its potential. Over the past ten years Salford has been transformed as a result of significant investment.

“Even though we are now facing tough economic times, it is essential we continue to harness the momentum that has built up in Salford to ensure the city and the people living here, continue to thrive. This development will bring more investment and further boost the local economy.

“The Greengate redevelopment has been the culmination of years of work with Central Salford Urban Regeneration Company and the project funders at the Home and Community Agency, NWDA and the European Regional Development Fund. I would like to thank them all for their help and support with this project, which further enhances Salford’s position as an international business destination.”

Felicity Goodey, Chairman of the Central Salford Urban Regeneration Company, said: “To be in a position to announce that construction is starting on site at Greengate is a great achievement for the URC and Salford City Council. This project is critical to the regeneration not only of the Chapel Street area of Salford but to the medieval quarter of Manchester. The partnership has worked tirelessly towards over the last four years to unlock this development, which will begin the transformation of one of the most important parts of the regional centre. This is another major legacy of Central Salford URC. It will create a new and exciting destination for both Cities.”

Mark Hughes, chief executive of NWDA, managing the ERDF programme, concluded: “Today marks the start of another significant development for Salford, which compliments the redevelopment work taking place in nearby Chapel Street and MediaCityUK. The public investment in Greengate is a huge opportunity to attract high-level private sector investment in a tough economic climate. It is particularly welcome to see such positive changes, which will secure new jobs and economic growth in Salford.”
