The Northwest is currently home to more small businesses within the food & drink sector than any other region in the UK. Its excellent transport links and vast human resource pool mean that Greater Manchester is a particular focus for investment, with companies in the sector producing a collective turnover in excess of £900 million. One firm that has certainly thrived is Stockport based Focused Nutrition Ltd.
Focused Nutrition Ltd, manufacturer of nutritionally enhanced cereal bars, has been operating out of Stockport for several years. By the time it was two years old the firm had already picked up a leading industry award, seen staff levels double and sales increase by twenty-five per cent from year one. Since then, Focused Nutrition Ltd has invested heavily in expanding its capability and implemented a full training matrix review. With plans currently underway to develop a new, healthy, ‘five-a-day’ product range aimed at the education and office worker market and a with new focus as a contract manufacturer and on bespoke work in the nutritional field Focused Nutrition is going from strength to strength.
Martin Rooney, managing director at Focused Nutrition, comments: “For a small company we have certainly achieved a great deal. Our product lines, which include Applejacks flapjacks and Omega 3+6 enriched bars, have been very well received and have been sold High Street stores such as Holland & Barrett and Superdrug. Our sports protein bar offering is developing very well at the moment.
We believe that despite the current economic climate we are in a good position to weather the storm and our recent investment in expanding our production capability reflects this belief. The last year has marked a high-level of new-business enquiries and we have worked closely with local authorities and the Local Authority Caterers Association (LACA) to help promote our brand. ”
The firm is certainly not alone in its desire to invest in the Greater Manchester region. As well as experiencing an influx of smaller, independent businesses, the area has also attracted major names within the food and drink sector, including Heinz, Kellogg’s, Joseph Holt Group and Warbutons Ltd.
Martin continues: “The region certainly boasts some big names in the food and drink sector, reflecting the area’s growing reputation as an effective business base. It has certainly suited Focused Nutrition in its first years of training and I am sure it will continue to do so in the future.”
