L’Oréal is the worlds number one cosmetics company, with a presence in over 130 countries worldwide and a seventy-year history in the UK.
Greater Manchester has been a key area for investment within the UK for many years, with the company’s decision over 30 years ago to locate the distribution centre for its Consumer and Professional Products in Manchester.
The creation of L’Oreal’s first regional hairdresser training academy was situated in Manchester city centre, and 2 new distribution centres, one for the Consumer Products Division and one for the Professional Products Division, to replace the previous single distribution centre.
Rapid growth meant that new larger distribution facilities were required to replace the previous facilities and it was no surprise that the global cosmetics giant chose to remain in Manchester given its many successful years in the area.
For Professional Products Division the preferred site was in Pilsworth, Bury; a site which was close to the previous facility and thus enabled significant staff retention and excellent road links. For the Consumer Products Division, Trafford Park was the preferred choice.
David Lynas, Operations Director at L’Oréal comments: “There were several important factors that contributed to our decision to relocate to Trafford Park and retain a distribution base in the Greater Manchester area.”
“It was important to us that we were able to retain the majority of our current workforce, as well as have access to a pool of skilled logistics staff to meet our expanding needs. It was also vital that the site we chose had sufficient room to facilitate further growth as well as excellent road links and transport facilities. Trafford Park ticked all these boxes.”
The new 22,000 sqm warehouse and distribution centre significantly increased L’Oréal’s storage capacity and streamlined its logistics flow, accelerating delivery times and improving customer service levels.
Another factor that helped L’Oréal achieve such a successful relocation was the assistance and advice offered by regional support organisations including Economic Development Team at Trafford Metropolitan Borough Council (TMBC), Manchester’s Investment Agency (MIDAS), and the Employment & Regeneration Partnership.
Councillor Stephanie Poole, executive member with portfolio for Economic Development and Asset Management at TMBC comments: “Working with key partnerships ensured that we could make L’Oréal’s relocation extremely successful. Together, we were able to support the firm with its site and building requirements, staff relocation, commuting plans, recruitment and training needs.
“Doing this enabled L’Oréal to remain completely focused on their business; an important point for any company undergoing expansion.”
