The College of Law

2 February, 2009 – The College of Law

Tricia Chatterton, The College of Law’s North West Regional Director, talks about the decision to locate a new state-of-the-art law school in the heart of Manchester City Centre.

The College of Law is the UK’s leading provider of professional development for lawyers working in private practice, in-house and in the public sector.

The College’s new £5.5 million Manchester centre is located in the thriving Piccadilly area of Manchester, a short walk away from many of the North West’s leading law firms and in close proximity to all rail, metro and bus routes.

The College of Law in Manchester will offer the Graduate Diploma in law and Legal Practice Course for students, the Professional Skills Course for trainees and professional development training programmes for qualified lawyers.

“We decided to move to Manchester because it has the largest legal sector outside London. It’s a dynamic and fast-paced city with a great legal history. Manchester is also home to top law firms such as DLA Piper, Eversheds, Halliwells, Cobbetts and Pannone,” explains Tricia Chatterton, North West Regional Director at The College of Law.

“As the capital of the North West, Manchester has an excellent range of shops, eateries, cultural venues and a comprehensive public transport network. In comparison to London, workers in Manchester often say there’s a better work/life balance here.

“Manchester’s outstanding UK and global transport links is a key factor in the city’s successful growth story. It was also a major influence in our decision to launch a new College here.”

The size of the North West economy provides a good economic environment for legal firms of all sizes. Manchester’s legal community has grown by 25% in the last two years and continues to grow rapidly. The city is now home to over 400 practices and 4,000 partners.

“We wanted to be located close to the heart of this legal centre. Intrinsic to the College’s development strategy is our commitment to working closely with law firms to provide tailored training packages. Our new site in Manchester ensures our relationships with the legal community continue to go from strength to strength.

“Manchester was the obvious choice to locate a new centre as it has a successful and dynamic legal community, including many leading regional, national and niche law firms, offering the full range of legal services, both business to business and for private individuals.”

“The College chose Manchester because the city is large enough to have a community of professional organisations and host key national events such as the Labour Party Conference and has an internationally renowned cultural and night life, but it is still small enough to negotiate your way around.”

The city’s leading law firms have welcomed of The College of Law’s move to Manchester.

Michael Clavell-Bate, Senior Office Partner of Eversheds Manchester office said: “The Manchester legal market is extremely competitive and growing. Work that historically would have gone to the City of London is now being undertaken within the Manchester City Region. As a result, the demand for high calibre graduate trainees continues to grow and the presence of The College of Law will justifiably enhance the crop of students available in the North West.”

MIDAS has worked to support the College with its expansion into the region, to help make the move as smooth as possible. The College also has close links with pro.manchester, the city’s key networking organisation for professionals, and plans to host regular events to create networking opportunities for the professional sector.
