The presentations given in March 2007 by MIDAS, Manchester’s Investment Agency, gave staff at the Training and Development Agency for Schools (TDA) a good insight into life in the city. Fiona Millard, a member of staff with the TDA, shares her thoughts on the sessions and why she feels positive about the lifestyle on offer.
“The sessions suggested that anyone wishing to improve their work–life balance, considering whether they can afford to buy a house, or planning children’s education should think about a move to Manchester.
“In three-quarters of an hour the MIDAS team gave a snapshot of what life could be like in Manchester. The city was presented as bright, vibrant and buzzing, a mix of old and new, culturally rich, and having seen great regeneration over the past 10 years. It was explained that rolling countryside, four national parks and small community village living is less than half an hour’s drive away.”
“The benefits of living in or around Manchester include housing that looked affordable – rented one-bedroom apartments in the city centre from upwards of £500 pcm, and purchase of a one bedroom flat from £100,000 to £120,000 in a nice area. Transport links include travel by train, tram or bus, and all cheaper and quicker than in London.
Additionally, the area has some highly performing schools located in and around Manchester.
“The session was closed with a real-life description of the relocation process given by Becky Rickell from the National Institute of Clinical Health & Excellence (NICE). She relocated to Manchester in 2006 and although she grew up in the region, had not lived there for eight years prior to the move. She was amazed by the changes to the city.
“Becky summed it up as Manchester getting the ‘face to go with the attitude’, and for her the
best thing was the slower pace of life and more relaxed atmosphere. She also mentioned thather colleagues with children benefited from shorter commutes and more time with their families.”
