Collecting the Contemporary for Tomorrow
Mark’s talk will focus on the fascinating world of contemporary art collecting, the critical contribution private patronage makes to the formation of a healthy visual arts ecology, the unique and visionary role the CAS has played over the last 100 years, and its ambitions in the Northwest.
Mark previously worked at The Lowry in Salford where he was Curator (Special Exhibitions) for five years.
Mark’s present role forms part of a major new initiative funded by Arts Council England, Northwest. His brief is to develop the audience for contemporary art and collecting in the Northwest by implementing new programmes of engagement around collecting within the region, while making connections with national and international projects, biennale, art fairs and other events.
Founded in 1910, the CAS is the national membership organisation for contemporary art enthusiasts and collectors. It exists to support contemporary artists and to promote collecting by both individuals and institutions. Through its programme of diverse activities it generates the funds which enable the purchase of significant works of contemporary art which it gifts to public collections in the UK, where they can be enjoyed by the widest possible audience now and in the future.
