Waste management, energy management and renewable energy are all growing industries in Manchester, the Northwest and the UK. The sector is strongly supported by leading research capabilities in renewable energy, energy management, nuclear and the built environment.
And Manchester’s status as the Low Carbon Economic Area (LCEA) for the Built Environment will place the region at the forefront of energy efficiency in buildings. The low carbon supply chain across Greater Manchester currently employs over 34,000 people across 1,900 companies and is expected to grow by 4% per annum. The LCEA programme will transform homes and buildings to cut emissions, create jobs, boost productivity and bring further economic growth.
Manchester is also home to The Joule Centre for energy Research & Development which is a partnership of Northwest Universities, commercial organisations and other stakeholders associated with the energy industry. The centre capitalises on the knowledge base in both academia and industry and it aims to significantly increase the region’s research capabilities in sustainable energy technologies and energy systems.
The nuclear industry forms one of Manchester’s core strengths in this sector and is one of the most important centres for nuclear research. Manchester’s research capability is bolstered by the University of Manchester and the Dalton Nuclear Institute, which provides the focal point for the University’s nuclear research and education activities and interacts with external bodies nationally and internationally. Launched in July 2005, its remit is to act as the driver and coordinator of the growth of Manchester’s nuclear expertise base and to become one of the world leading centres of nuclear research and education.
With a strong and extensive skill base in the region and a world-class centre for research, Manchester has attracted waste management companies, renewable energy companies, manufacturers, engineers and consultants including Siemens, Jacobs Engineering and ENER-G.
