Manchester city region has a wealth of culturally significant locations including over 30 museums and galleries, more than 95km of canals, six steam engines, 15 textile collections, 42 traditional markets and thousands of acres of parks and countryside.

Within the city centre is Urbis, one of Manchester’s most striking contemporary buildings that explores the culture of cities all around the world. Another place to visit is Manchester’s Museum of Science and Industry, which tells a story of history, science and industry in Manchester. Some of the most prestigious and breathtaking art collections in the city region can be found at the Whitworth Art Gallery and Manchester Art Gallery.

Within easy reach of the city centre is Salford Quays, home to the Imperial War Museum North and the Lowry, both of which are fascinating buildings to visit.

There is a great deal of cultural heritage to offer outside of the city centre, for example stately homes such as Lyme Park and Dunham Massey Hall which are both situated to the south of the region.

For picturesque landscape and great country walks head to the North of the region. Surrounded by areas of outstanding natural beauty, Manchester is within relatively short journeys of the Lake District, the Yorkshire Dales and Derbyshire.
