Energy & Environment

Waste management, energy management and renewable energy are all growing sub-sectors in Manchester, the Northwest and the UK.

The sector works closely with the Aviation industry through Manchester Metropolitan University’s Centre for Aviation Transport and the Environment (CATE). This £5million government-funded aviation project brings together universities, industry, pressure groups and the government to ensure the future growth of the sector in an environmentally efficient way.

The nuclear industry forms one of Manchester's core strengths in this sector, and is one of the most important centres for nuclear research. With a strong and extensive skill base in the region and a world-class centre for research at the University of Manchester, Manchester has attracted numerous manufacturers, engineers and consultants including William Hare, PB Power and Day & Zimmerman.

Following the “Future of Nuclear Power” consultation process by the Department of Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform recent announcements to re-energise the nuclear power industry and build new reactors in the UK further strengthens the international focus by countries such as the US, France and China.

Manchester’s research capability is bolstered by the University of Manchester and the Dalton Nuclear Institute, which provides the focal point for the University’s nuclear research and education activities and interacts with external bodies nationally and internationally. Launched in July 2005, its remit is to act as the driver and coordinator of the growth of Manchester’s nuclear expertise base and to become one of the world leading centres of nuclear research and education.
