Manchester consistently features in fourth position in UK retail rankings (Experian), largely due to its mix of high street names and independent retailer offering. The region benefits from having 20 million customers located within a two hour drive and annual retail spend in Manchester city centre alone totals £2 billion.
The region also comprises a number of thriving town centres many of which are currently witnessing huge investment in their retail offer such as the £350 million retail-led investment in The Rock in Bury. Other retailing hubs in Manchester City Region include Manchester Airport, which recently underwent a retail redevelopment in both terminals 1& 2, and the hugely successful Trafford Centre, which welcomed over 30 million visitors in 2009 alone.
Consistently positioned within the top three city centre retail offerings, Manchester is home to the UK’s largest in-town mall The Manchester Arndale, which is bucking national retail trends by witnessing increasing footfall statistics.
In addition to existing retail hubs, a number of mixed-use developments are looking to include a dedicated retail provision enhancing the city retail offer including Spinningfields’ The Avenue, a high-end retail offering anchored by Armani.
MIDAS is working alongside Cityco (Manchester’s city centre management company), to enhance the city centre retail opportunities and on behalf of Local Authorities and developers to identify retail opportunities for the region’s town centres.
