18 February, 2008 – Bolton Council and MMUBS collaborate to support small businesses
A collaboration between Bolton Council and Manchester Metropolitan University Business School (MMUBS) is aiming to improve the growth and competitiveness of SMEs in Bolton and surrounding towns.
The MMUBS Centre for Enterprise, created by the University to support entrepreneurs and established smaller firms in the North West, is offering small and medium sized businesses in the financial and professional services sector a free leadership development session called Leading Edge in February.
Ayyub Patel, Head of Business Competitiveness, Bolton Council explains: “Business Bolton is delighted to support the Leading Edge Programme which plays an important part in helping businesses from Boltons Financial and Professional Sector to capitalise upon the huge learning opportunities for owner managers to improve their business management skills.
“The legacy of the programme for participating businesses will be to create new jobs, grow stronger and become competitive in todays global economy.”
Leading Edge is aimed at accountants, the legal profession, architects, quantity surveyors, advertising, market research and public relations consultancies helps SME owner-managers develop their leadership skills.
The programme focuses on developing leaders and managers soft skills, such as communication and interpersonal skills, and tackles issues such as recruitment and retention of staff.
Paul Owen, of Home Owner Loans & Mortgages on Tonge Moor Road, Bolton, took part in a Leading Edge workshop in November. He said: “I was interested in a business support programme that built on my leadership skills. Leading Edge allowed me to take time out to evaluate how I developed the business and consider how I could improve my skills and, in turn, the company.
“It was really helpful to observe how my peers in the sector manage their businesses and I feel Ive gained a greater understanding of both my colleagues and clients.”
Professor Ossie Jones, Director of the Centre for Enterprise at MMUBS, added: “Taking the Leading Edge programme to Bolton has been a positive experience in collaboration with both Business Bolton and Financial & Professional sector businesses.
“We are pleased to be extending the programme in Bolton for February 2008.”
The Leading Edge workshop will be held at The University of Bolton Design Studio on Wednesday 20th February 2008.
The programme is funded by the European Regional Development Fund and there is no fee for qualifying businesses, although eligibility is dependent on geographical location, business type and size of business. For eligibility enquiries, please contact the Project Team on 0161 247 6069.
