27 May, 2008 – Councillors signal a ground breaking future for Stockport
Stockport councillors donned hard hats and boots to carry out the ground-breaking ceremony for Stockport's new £13 million landmark office building.
Situated opposite the Hat Works museum on the A6, the new building, named St Peter’s Square, is one of the key milestones in the Council’s multi-million pound regeneration plan for the town centre.
Council Leader Councillor Dave Goddard and executive member for regeneration, Councillor Kevin Hogg, joined Clive Perrin, development director and Neil Mort development manager of HBG Properties, in operating a 13 tonnes mechanical digger to start excavating the foundations of this 50,000 sq ft building.
Councillor Goddard said: “This ceremony marks a significant step forward in our ambitious vision for the town centre. Our masterplan, ‘Future Stockport,’ was designed to unlock the town’s full potential and this landmark building will not only create an exciting new gateway into the centre but will also attract major employers to invest in the town creating new jobs.”
The new office building will form an integral part of the council’s £3m remodelling of the St Peter’s Square area into an exciting new civic space and cultural quarter. It is located within a 5 minute walk of the bus and train stations, adjoins the town’s shopping facilities and there are over 2,400 parking spaces within 500m of the site.
It will also provide the first Grade A office accommodation in the town centre, which will offer an attractive alternative to existing employers and encourage new occupiers to Stockport through its premium quality office space.
Councillor Kevin Hogg, added: “This cutting edge development will change the perception of the office market in Stockport and we are very pleased to be working with HBG Properties in delivering this project. We are now starting to see the vision become a reality”
From HBG, Clive Perrin said: “After much preparatory work, it is exciting to see the start on the foundations for this ambitious project. We are delighted to be part of the Future Stockport initiative and look forward to building on the development partnership with Stockport Council.”
Designed by award-winning architects HKR, the building will offer a very flexible contemporary design with single column-free floor plates of 12,000 sq ft. Some 2,700 sq ft of restaurant/showroom accommodation will open onto the newly pedestrianised Hooper Street opposite the popular Oriental Buffet restaurant.
High quality standards of finish, impressive double height entrance reception, flexible, energy efficient, air-conditioned space and secure parking will set new benchmarks for the town.
According to Clive Perrin: “Stockport is home to numerous substantial professional firms and public and private companies who deserve a better choice of office environment in order to attract and retain the best staff. St Peter’s Square will give them the opportunity for the first time of occupying top quality office accommodation in the town centre when completed in June 2009.”
The project is being built by Salford-based HBG Construction to exacting standards with the aim of achieving the highly-prized ‘Excellent’ BREEAM rating demanded by today’s energy conscious and socially responsible occupiers.
