Greater Manchester Challenge Launch

6 May, 2008 – Greater Manchester Challenge Launch

The Minister for Children and families and minister for the North West, Beverley Hughes, has officially launched the Greater Manchester Challenge at The Lowry in Salford Quays.

Professor Mel Ainscow from The University of Manchester is the Chief Adviser of the £50 million campaign over three years to raise standards in schools across some of the most deprived areas of the region.

Between 2008-2011, the Department for Children, Schools and Families will be working with the ten local authorities in the Greater Manchester region to raise standards in schools and give every child a better chance in life.

The target for the Greater Manchester Challenge over the three years will be to turn around educational underperformance in the region and therefore achieve more outstanding schools and better results for their pupils.

Professor Ainscow is a co-director of the University’s Centre for Equity in Education and Marden Visiting Professor at the Hong Kong Institute of Education.

He was previously a head teacher, local education authority inspector and lecturer at the University of Cambridge, where he was one of the instigators of the highly influential school improvement initiative: Improving the Quality of Education for All.
