MANCAT student Fiza Shah has won a prestigious Aimhigher regional award for the 16-19 FE/Sixth Form College Learner of the Year 2008 in the Greater Manchester area.

The awards are designed to raise awareness of the benefits of participation in higher education (HE) by showcasing the achievements of pupils who aspire to enter into HE.

Fiza, a 19-year-old health and social care student from Cheetham Hill, studies at the North Manchester Sixth Form College in Harpurhey and was nominated for the award by her tutor Stuart Mckie, who teaches on the Level 3 OCR National Extended Diploma in Health and Social Care.

He nominated Fiza because, despite an uncertain start, she progressed from a foundation vocational course to an intermediate course and then to an advanced course and is now set to go on to study on a psychology degree at university.

Stuart said: “When I first started teaching Fiza, her attitude to her studies was a concern for me, but four months in she seemed to understand that her actions would affect her future. Since then, she has worked really hard to turn things around and is likely to achieve a merit grade which will allow her to study at university in September. We are extremely proud of her and I think she is an excellent role model for young people.”

The Aimhigher Greater Manchester Awards 2008 will be held on the evening of 26th June at Whitworth Hall at The University of Manchester. There will be eight award categories in total ranging from the Year 9 Aimhigher Learner through to the Higher Education Aimhigher Learner.

The awards will be presented from 6.45pm with winners receiving a certificate and an Aimhigher goody bag. In addition to the presentations there will be a range of guest speakers, entertainment and a buffet for award winners and their guests will be provided.
