18 April, 2008 – Manchester Art Gallery wins tourism award
Manchester Art Gallery has been awarded Large Visitor Attraction of the Year at the Manchester Tourism Awards 2008.
An undercover judge who visited the gallery said it was "wonderful", with "marvellous exhibits beautifully displayed".
The gallery was also highly commended for its two other entries to the awards – for the Business Tourism Award and for Tourism Experience of the Year (for Kylie – The Exhibition).
Last year, the gallery attracted over 380,000 visitors, making it the gallery’s most successful year on record.
Commenting on the award, councillor Mike Amesbury said: "This is a great reflection of the achievements of Manchester Art Gallery over the course of the last year."
The Manchester Tourism Awards are organised by Marketing Manchester and supported by the Northwest Regional Development Agency.
Manchester Art Gallery was recently named as one of five nominees for the Guardian’s prestigious Family Friendly Museum Award. The winner will be announced on May 1st.
According to the newspaper, the gallery "manages to attract every age to its world-renowned collection of pre-Raphaelite paintings and 17th-century silverware".
