Manchester's Hemisphere gets 'Hands On' with Preston Museum Campaign

Manchester based agency Hemisphere has created a campaign for Preston's Museum Group that aims to attract families to the five museums as well as increase footfall.

The agency’s brief was to develop a single creative concept and campaign that would help position each of the different museums within the Group – the Harris Museum & Art Gallery, Museum of Lancashire, National Football Museum, Queen’s Lancashire Regimental Museum and Ribble Steam Railway – as fun places for families to visit.

Hemisphere created the Hands On Gang, five colourful and eye-catching finger puppets, that represent each of the museums and have been designed especially to appeal to the target audience. Andy O’Dwyer, designer at Hemisphere, comments, “We had to find a really upbeat way of getting across that visiting museums is a fun thing to do for families. The Hands On Gang were created as a kind of friendship group that kids could identify with and a means of helping families plan a great day out. Whilst each member of the Gang has a different interest, they have all been created in the same style, ensuring that they are easily recognisable across all elements of communication.”

At the heart of the agency’s campaign for Preston Museums Consortium is a website  where visitors can meet the Hands On Gang and find out more about the museums and forthcoming special events. A local and national advertising campaign has been implemented to drive traffic to the site and Hemisphere has produced street liners, banners, signage and leaflets featuring the Hands On Gang. The agency has also been involved in creating Hands On Gang activity points and trails in each of the five museums.

Emma Parsons, project manager for Preston Museums Group, adds, “The Hands on Gang represent a great way to bring five very different venues together to communicate the single message that museums are fun for families. Hemisphere has successfully created a really flexible campaign tool that we will be able to use across lots of different platforms and we’re delighted with the agency’s approach.”

Preston Museums Group is a partnership funded by Renaissance North West as part of the North West Museums Hub.

Hemisphere, founded 20 years ago, specialises in creating branding solutions for the public experience market. The agency has created successful campaigns for a number of the North West’s leading museums and galleries including the Imperial War Museum North, Manchester Art Gallery and The Lowry.
