Over 100 local companies meet and greet Stockport Council buyers

20 March, 2008 – Over 100 local companies meet and greet Stockport Council buyers

Stockport Council's Meet the Buyer event at Edgeley Park on Wednesday 19th March was a huge success.

The event was attended by 125 local companies, with over 200 one-to-one appointments with Council buyers. Meetings were available with a whole range of buyers from the Council and associated companies including NPS Stockport, Stockport Homes and Pure Innovations. Attendees ranged from building supplies and cleaning services, to printers and photographers.

The aim of the event was to help local companies understand how to do business with the Council and its key partners by arranging face-to-face meetings with their buyers. This is in addition to a number of existing initiatives to help local people and businesses within the borough to win contracts from the Council.

Leader of Stockport Council, Councillor Dave Goddard, addressing the attendees at Edgeley Park, said: "Stockport Council is committed to supporting businesses in the borough and helping them to develop and prosper.

"The aim of today is to explain the Council’s procurement process and make it open and accessible to local businesses. We hope that by the end of today, local businesses will have an equal chance of tendering for, and winning Council contracts."

Seminars on ‘How to do business with the Council’ were also given throughout the event by the Council’s Head of Corporate Procurement, Martin Gleave. The seminars gave a great insight into the council’s procurement system, the current procurement legislation in place and how to go about winning contracts with the Council.

John Cooper of Stockport-based Ikon Photography, said: "This event has given me real insight into doing business with the Council. The face to face meetings are a great idea and really helped clarify the procurement process".

Philip Bradbury of Intersect Uk, added: "I found the event very informative, sometimes approaching councils can be a daunting task for small local business like Intersect Uk. It was very beneficial to see the structures in place and meet the core people in my local council, thanks for the opportunity!"

About a quarter of the Council’s goods and services are already obtained from local companies and there is a strong likelihood of increasing this following leads from the event.
