A delegation of senior officials from the Chinese Embassy in London recently visited Manchester to learn about the cutting-edge digital technology taking shape at Media City and reinforce its commitment to building stronger China-British relationships in the field of science and technology.
Dr Wang Baoqing, the Minister Counsellor for Science and Technology, explored the developing Media City site and held in depth discussions with experts at the University’s Innovation Research Centre.
The delegation, hosted by MIDAS, Manchester’s Inward Investment Agency, was held on the request of Dr Wang who, in recognising the global significance of Media City, was particularly keen to learn more about the developments first hand..
Part of the visit was to focus specifically on digital delivery technology at Media City , alongside Manchester’s wider digital infrastructure and to spend valuable time with members of the Manchester Institute of Innovation Research.
The Chinese delegation also included, Mr CAO Zhouhua, the First Secretary for Science and Technology and Mr PAN Zeyong, the Second Secretary for Science and Technology.
Dr Wang and members of Wuhan East Lake High Tech Development Zone met with MIDAS in 2005 when they took part in the launch of the SinoVentures project, a partnership between MIDAS, Manchester City Council and Manchester Science Park Ltd (MSPL) (and funded by the NWDA) who work together to offer support to Chinese companies seeking to establish a presence in Manchester.
This recent visit enabled MIDAS to advance talks with Dr Wang and other Embassy members on the MIDAS strategy for collaboration with China.
Colin Sinclair, Chief Executive at MIDAS, Manchester’s Inward Investment Agency said: “Not only does MIDAS have a strong relationship with Chinese businesses overseas , but we are privileged to have  highly respected universities that continue to work alongside the very best experts in technology and science in China.
“The fields of science and technology are growing in significance in both countries it only makes sense that we should look to share information and best practise. This continued communication between the Chinese Embassy in London and MIDAS further strengthens our commitment to our ongoing partnership.”
Dr Wang said: “The visit to Media City and the discussions had at the Manchester Institute of Innovation Research gave us a fascinating insight into the ground-breaking digital and technological developments emerging in Manchester. We will continue to keep in close contact with MIDAS and look forward to following the progress of these important advances for scientific and technological industries.
