UTC is the latest educational establishment to arrive at MediaCityUK
Owners of MediaCityUK, Peel Media, have recently completed a deal with the University Technical College (UTC) to bring the £10.4m facility to the Manchester development.
UTC@MediaCityUK, as it will be known, will be based in a 6,200 sqm building located at the junction of South Langworthy Road and Broadway and will specialise in the creative and digital industries. It will give 14-19 year olds from Greater Manchester the chance to work with employers at MediaCityUK through its direct link to the industry.
Funded by the Department for Education, the UTC@MediaCityUK is sponsored by four partners, The Aldridge Foundation, The University of Salford, Salford City College and The Lowry and supported by a range of businesses across MediaCityUK and the wider region. It will provide 14-19 year olds with an outstanding education in the core curriculum combined with the right skills to access careers in the digital, media and creative industries and will open in September 2014 at MediaCityUK. All UTC students will be guaranteed a place on either a Salford City College or University of Salford course so long as they meet the minimum entry requirements.
The growth and development of talent has become a fundamental focus at MediaCityUK, as yet more educational occupiers form part of the ever-increasing media development.
The University of Salford, FutureSkills, Oasis Academy, Bright Future, The Landing, Aqua Rosa and now the University Technical College (UTC) have over the last two years, joined the MediaCityUK community.
Stephen Wild, managing director of MediaCityUK said: “As education, training and development continue to be debated by businesses and political figures, it is vital MediaCityUK has a learning hub at the core of its creative environment. Bringing together talent and academia creates a whole host of benefits and opportunities, including knowledge partnership sharing and ultimately job creation. We are proud to have such a diverse and rich range of educational providers located here and working with our creative and media businesses (currently around 120) to create and exploit new opportunities for all – and we warmly welcome the UTC to our community”.
The Education Funding Agency was advised by DTZ on the UTC deal at MediaCityUK.
