The second Manchester International Festival came to a close on 19 July, following 18 days of world premieres and special events.
The Festival presented more than 20 new commissions, including the immersive theatre of It Felt Like A Kiss, Zaha Hadid Architects’ installation for the music of Bach, Elbow’s collaboration with the Hallé and Rufus Wainwright’s debut opera Prima Donna.
Over a third of the 09 Festival programme was free, including major new work by Jeremy Deller and Marina Abramovic.
Total audiences for 2009 were around 225,000, passing both the Festival’s target of 210,000 and the 200,000 attenders of the 2007 event. The Festival also exceeded its 2009 box office target of £1.7 million.
