Despite a nationwide drop in circulation figures, The Manchester Evening News sees a growth in online figures, and recognition for its huge free circulation.
Overall, circulation figures for English local newspapers were significantly lower than last year, but Manchester Evening News had some positive news to report. Online visits in certain areas increased by around 12%, and due to the MEN’s innovative hybrid circulation approach, they were catapulted to the top of the Audit Bureau of Circulation’s league table, achieving status as the UK’s largest regional daily newspaper. The ABC regional newspaper circulation figures published this month now take both free and paid-for circulation into their total count. According to the latest count, The Manchester Evening News sold a daily average of 77,125 copies in Greater Manchester and gave away a daily average of 83,768 copies from Monday to Saturday in the first six months of 2008. Free copies, which account for just over half of its circulation are distributed free in central Manchester, but the paper is still paid-for in the suburbs.
Managing director, Mark Rix said, "In these challenging times for our industry, we are delighted that the Manchester Evening News has maintained its position as the UK’s largest regional daily newspaper.
"Rather than just increasing the number of papers we circulate, we look at how the market wants to receive news and then provide the most appropriate media channels.”
