Manchester-based CBI Global Freight Management has been bought by Globelink China Logistics as part of the company’s expansion into the UK.

The move sees a substantial investment into Manchester and Globelink CEO, Soloman Cai, has also signed a three year lease on a double office suite at the World Freight Terminal at Manchester Airport which the company moved in to on 06th September 2010

Nigel Sleigh, Managing Director of CBI Global Freight Management, commented: “The acquisition of our company by one of the world’s foremost logistics companies will not only ensure we can continue to maintain our growth in the Far East and also Worldwide due to Globelink China’s extensive Agency network. The developments in the UK follow a similar expansion in the USA.

“Make no mistake, Manchester has been chosen over London by Globelink because of the unrivalled logistical opportunities afforded by Manchester Airport.

Manchester will be the company’s UK headquarters and there will also be a London ‘branch’ opening in the near future – with Manchester continuing to be the HQ. There will also be investment in a Central Manchester sales office. CBI Global Freight Management will re-brand to Uni Logistics, a subsidiary of Globelink China Logistics Group, dealing with all aspects of international freight forwarding. This will compliment other Uni Logistics’ offices.

The relationship between the two companies started in 2005 and acquisition talks had been ongoing since 2009.

The move comes less than five months after MIDAS unveiled its China Working Links paper and the organisation used this experience to provide consultation for both companies during negotiations.

Angie Robinson, Chief Executive of MIDAS, said: “China is a huge and growing world economic force and to have Globelink China Logistics choose Manchester as its UK base is a vote of confidence in our region’s business and unrivalled transport links and infrastructure.”

Nigel Sleigh added: “The impact of this deal cannot be exaggerated. The purchasing power and contacts of Globelink provided during our strategic partnership of 2009 has already seen our business grow 110%. Becoming the company’s UK HQ is an unrivalled opportunity to further this growth.”
