Manchester tops latest economic growth ranking

Manchester has been ranked  as the number one growth city outside of London by leading business and financial adviser Grant Thornton.

The report ranks the high growth score of English cities across economic, demographic and environmental spheres over an eight year period, from 2004 to 2012.

Manchester was placed first with a score of 205, with Birmingham second and Milton Keynes third.

Cities were also ranked in terms of ‘dynamism’ – focusing on the quality of growth in terms of contributing towards local economic value. Here, Manchester ranks third outside of London behind Cambridge and Reading.

The report goes on to stress the importance of collaboration around growth corridors, addressing functional, large scale, economic areas which have been at the heart of growth over the last decade and are likely to maintain a pivotal role in shaping that growth in the future. Prevalent amongst these is the Liverpool – Manchester – Leeds corridor.

In addition Manchester has one of the highest levels of economic and social growth, encompassing the following factors;

  • Large local economies
  • High level of employment
  • Young and economically active workforce
  • Good access to services and amenities
