ThoughtWorks, a global IT consultancy, and Swedish Bank HandelsBanken are two companies that have successfully moved into new offices in Greater Manchester, following consultation with MIDAS.
ThoughtWorks, a global IT consultancy, has announced its plans to build out a new regional centre based in Manchester. They moved into new offices in City Tower at Piccadilly, Manchester, following consultation with MIDAS earlier this year.
The company which specialises in Agile-based systems development, consulting, and transformation services to Global 1000 companies, has 15 members of staff based at the site.
Founded in Chicago, ThoughtWorks is highly regarded and well established across the Americas and Asia Pacific. It is strengthening its European Operation by re-locating its Northern England office in central Manchester in conjunction with an aggressive hiring plan for both the UK and Germany based operations.
“We solve the toughest technical problems with the top 2% of software professionals. The NorthWest in particular offers a high quality talent pool and boasts impressive and continuing Economic Growth” comments Mark Collin, ThoughtWorks’ newest addition to the senior Business Development Team.
ThoughtWorks has a well-established client base in the North with clients including Autotrader, the BBC and Laterooms to name only a few.
“Our Thought Leadership in software and technology sets the standard in the Industry and we see Manchester as an important cornerstone in our plans for European expansion. We are very excited about our new centre in Manchester” said Luke Barratt – ThoughtWorks’ Europe Managing Director.
Angie Robinson, chief executive of MIDAS, said: “Thoughtworks has got off to a flying start in Manchester and we’re keen to support them however we can, as they settle into the city. It’s a perfect time for their arrival with ongoing developments in Manchester’s IT industry providing solid focal points for them to conduct their business.”
To kick off its expansion, ThoughtWorks has hosted a number of Thought Leading events over the past month, targeted at business leaders, software professionals and those looking to improve the way software is delivered using Agile methodologies.
The events have been well received, drawing attendance from over 120 professionals and included the ‘Mini Conference’ covering a range of thought leading topics, from the Tech Radar, User Experience Design Principles through specific events, Agile for Leaders and Continuous Delivery.
ThoughtWorks encourages active collaboration and participation at its ‘Geek nights’; informal sessions which are held monthly at its new offices in City Tower.

In May, Swedish Bank Handelsbanken launched a new branch on Hale Road in Altrincham. The bank, established in 1871 with over 100 branches in Great Britain, has a reputation for providing personalised and bespoke banking services to both corporate and individual customers. The new branch covers the areas of Hale, Altrincham, Sale and Knutsford. The team includes branch manager Joe McGrath, corporate banking manager Ian Noke, individual banking manager Mark Cundiff and documentation manager Orfan Mushtaq, all of whom have a wealth of experience in the banking sector.
Joe McGrath, branch manager for Handelsbanken in Altrincham, said, “We’ve made a great start in Altrincham and have been really pleased by the fantastic response we’ve received from the local community. There are few banks that can boast local decision-makers in their branches – people like the personal service that we provide and they appreciate being able to speak to someone with the authority to make a decision.”
“Handelsbanken’s decentralised model and lack of bonus culture also allows the Altrincham team to decide who they wish to bank, and gives the freedom to tailor the credit decision, pricing and deal structure, ensuring the branch is the bank.”
