In October, work began for the Manchester Metrolink Phase 3a extension project. MPact-Thales consortium were awarded the construction and maintenance of this development.
Greater Manchester Passenger Transport Executive (GMPTE) appointed M-Pact Thales to design, build and maintain the new lines as part of a £575 million project. It has also announced more details about the timescales for the expansion.
The new lines to Oldham and Rochdale, Droylsden in Tameside and Chorlton in South Manchester will nearly double the size of the existing Metrolink network.
The contract starts immediately with preparatory survey and exploratory works together with the detailed civil engineering, track systems and operating systems design works. Main construction of the extension will start in 2009 with trams running to Droylsden by spring 2012.
