Manchester Metropolitan University (MMU) is offering £1,000 of funding to businesses that take on a graduate for a short-term placement. Businesses can benefit from a bright graduate mind to give their projects a fresh perspective, and an enthusiastic new member of staff.
Taking on a graduate intern is easier than you might think, and isn’t just for big businesses. There’s no red tape and it’s simple to apply. Businesses need to apply before 30 September 2010 to ensure funding is available before March 2011.
Many local businesses have already reaped the rewards of a graduate intern, and the response has been overwhelmingly positive. Graduates have helped to get sidelined projects off the ground; develop new customer initiatives; brought new ideas and thinking to businesses and have provided a low cost way to reassess businesses practices in companies across the region.
Greenlight Computers provide IT support and outsourcing services to businesses in Manchester and the Northwest. They employed a graduate on an eight-week, part-time placement earlier this year. John Sewell, director, commented: “When I heard about the project I thought it was a great idea; we could help someone to get a foot in the door, and they could help us with a particular project.
“Being able to hand a piece of work to a capable, educated person was great and added real value to the company, as we now have a comprehensive customer database. It feels good to be able to offer a helping hand to someone who’s struggling to find experience.”
Graduates have been placed in every type of business, from start-ups through to global financial institutions. They have also attended a seven-day course, run by MMU and Blue Orchid, to help them maximise their talents and skills.
The scheme is aimed at companies with fewer than 50 employees, however some sectors with more than 50 employees can also apply:
Low Carbon products and service
Opportunities presented by an aging society
MMU and Blue Orchid also provide structured support for businesses taking on a graduate, helping them to prepare, and supporting them throughout.
It’s simple to apply, there’s no red tape, and you could we working with a graduate within weeks.
