Manchester University spin off company Myconostica has started selling a new test designed to identify causes of fungal pneumonia. The fungus is the most common cause of death for bone marrow transplant and leukemia patients and is one of the first symptoms of AIDS.

According to the Myconostica’s website the test enables doctors to identify the two key causes of fungal pneumonia which are pneumocystis and aspergillus in less than four hours. This means that once the causes have been discovered treatment can start and mortality rates drop from 90% to 40%.

David Denning, chairman and chief medical officer said “Early identification of disease reduces the patient’s exposure to inappropriate drug treatments”, reducing mortality rates and high treatments costs.
