Plans agreed for new £20m Manchester BMX centre

A new state-of-the-art BMX cycling arena is to be built in Manchester, it has emerged.

Plans for the £20 million centre have been agreed upon this week, with the facility to be built in the car park of the Velodrome that was constructed for the 2002 Commonwealth Games.

It is hoped that the arena, which will seat 4,500 people, will help to train cyclists for the 2012 Olympics in London and could inspire a new generation of young people to take up the sport.

Manchester city council and regeneration company New East Manchester are now looking for contractors to build the facility.

Eddie Smith, chief executive of New East Manchester, said he hopes that the right facilities will help BMX riders to see even more success than in Beijing last year.

“We are clear in our aspiration to deliver a world class indoor BMX centre that will offer a home for the British BMX team for the 2012 Olympics and beyond,” he added.

The news comes after British Cycling chief executive Peter King told the Times last year that the Velodrome was struggling to cope with the increased interest surrounding cycling after the Beijing Olympics.
