The Christie NHS Foundation Trust, Manchester’s comprehensive cancer centre and the largest single site cancer centre in Europe, has been named as one of the top three NHS trusts in England.
The specialist hospital ranked third in a league table of over 200 NHS trusts compiled by NHS England who assessed the trusts across seven different areas including waiting times for operations, cancer treatment, time spent in A&E and ambulance response times.
The news confirms The Christie’s position as the UK’s leader in oncology and its vital role as a player in the UK’s £120 billion growing life sciences market.
With a staff of over 3,000 and 60,000 patients treated in the 2023-24 period, The Christie is the largest radiotherapy provider in the NHS and contains the largest chemotherapy and brachytherapy units in the UK. It is also part of the Manchester Cancer Research Centre, and the Wolfson Molecular Imaging Centre is located on site, ran by the University of Manchester.
The Organisation of European Cancer Institutes’ recent audit of The Christie found that it was ‘high performing in excellence of patient care and the quantity and quality of research, indicating leading research from the centre and much with high impact.’
Following the recent announcement of driving investment to Greater Manchester’s Life Science sector and intentions outlined in a prospectus highlighting its strengths and opportunities, the work delivered by the centre is further testament to why the city region is one of the UK’s most dynamic for health innovation.
