Whitecroft Lighting

One of the UK’s largest manufacturers of professional lighting fixtures, Manchester-based Whitecroft Lighting recently launched Whitecroft Vitality, their new circular economy platform supporting ongoing innovation in Greater Manchester to meet the city-region’s 2038 carbon neutral objectives.

Establishing one of the world’s first recessed luminaires with Cradle to Cradle certification, Whitecroft Lighting now has the ability to keep their lighting products at their highest utility through life and then refurbish, re-purpose, re-distribute, resell and ultimately recover luminaires. A Cradle to Cradle Certified™ product is scored in five quality categories — material health, material reutilization, renewable energy and carbon management, water stewardship, and social fairness.

Their new circular concept was born back in 2018, inspired by the need to update the Cheshire Police Authority’s (CPA) 15-year-old internal lighting system. Maintaining the CPA’s current lighting system would have caused ongoing and significant disruption so Whitecroft worked collaboratively with BAM FM and Gibson & Ryan to upgrade their lighting by re-using many of the existing fittings and enabling increased control, enhanced efficiency and a healthier work environment.

As part of this retrofit project, Whitecroft retained the luminaire body louvre and flying leads and upgraded 120 Cirrus light fittings to LED, 75 stairwell fittings from fluorescent tubes to LED, provided 1300 bespoke bazel units to install more efficient downlights in the existing ceiling  and modified 82 control modules to upgrade the corridor lighting functionality. A new wireless control system, Organic Response®,was also installed which drastically reduced the need for new cabling and increased functionality.

Whitecroft Lighting has capitalised on the benefits of being located in Greater Manchester by accessing outstanding manufacturing talent at the local world-renowned universities to home-grown local apprenticeships schemes and local supply chains. They have also recently hooked into the digital and tech talent at Manchester Metropolitan University for the rapid prototyping of their wireless lighting control technology.

Due to the specialist nature of the company’s lighting products, their offer is more aligned with active and engaging environments but it’s the industrial and truly functional spirit of operating from Tameside and indeed Greater Manchester that influenced Whitecroft’s new innovative circular approach.

"The people and businesses of Greater Manchester are very real and it’s this practical and truly functional attitude which has not only inspired but has become the fabric of our new circular economy offering” said Neil McCarroll, Managing Director, Whitecroft Lighting.

‘We see sustainability as a driver in everything we do; it’s not just one person’s job but part of everyone’s role here and within the supply chain’ continued Neil McCarroll.’ We don’t want to simply green wash but make it intrinsic to our culture and our ability to serve the local area.’

Matt Paskin, Design Director, Whitecroft Lighting said:

" It’s not just a product but more of an innovative process to enable regenerative cycles using a modular approach. Our lighting products weren’t designed to be re-used 15 years ago but now we have an opportunity to retain existing products and materials and future-proof with advanced technology which not only preserves the aesthetic but reduces cost and the long-term energy output.”

Whitecroft Lighting recently won the Make UK Energy and Sustainability award for the North West region for its Whitecroft Vitality Solution. The award recognises companies that have significantly improved the overall environmental performance and enhanced sustainability.
