Manchester's Inward Investment Agency Turns 20

24th November 2017

Categories: Latest News

MIDAS, Manchester’s inward investment agency has reached a milestone celebrating its 20th birthday.

Since being established in 1997, the award winning agency has created and safeguarded 70,000 jobs from almost 1,000 companies.

The inward investment agency has been central to establishing Greater Manchester as a top 10 global investment location and managed major investments and relocation projects with the likes of Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer, Distrelec, Syngenta, BNY Mellon and AEGIS.

Tim Newns, said: “Over the last twenty years, MIDAS has helped to create and safeguard over 70,000 jobs across Greater Manchester, spanning a range of industry sectors and Greater Manchester has grown significantly as a global investment location, reaching the pinnacle of being ranked in the top 10 of the IBM Global investment monitor last year. From large-scale financial/business services and media investments from the likes of BNY Mellon, Freshfields and Brown Bag Films; to highly innovative life sciences and manufacturing investments from the likes of Hologic and MBDA, MIDAS has facilitated significant investment that has helped Greater Manchester become the UK’s most successful regional city for the attraction of FDI.

“However, without the continued support of the 10 Greater Manchester local authorities – the GMCA - and our wider private and public sector stakeholders, MIDAS would not be the award-winning agency it is today. Likewise, we have always been fortunate to attract a terrific team, all of which have served MIDAS and Greater Manchester tremendously over the years, motivated by some truly inspirational companies that we meet on a day to day basis, a large proportion of which have ultimately invested in the city region.”

“Although we are approaching challenging times in terms of the UK and global economy, there are some incredibly exciting opportunities that lie ahead for Greater Manchester and I have absolute confidence that both MIDAS and Greater Manchester has the skill and offer to take full advantage of them.”

Mike Blackburn, chairman of the Greater Manchester Local Enterprise Partnership board, said: “MIDAS has made a significant difference to the economy of Greater Manchester, attracting investment from across the globe and supporting the creation of thousands of jobs.

“This is a landmark year in the history of MIDAS and we look forward to its continuing success in attracting the new opportunities for Greater Manchester.”

Here are some of Greater Manchester’s top investments secured by the agency and the year they established their presence in Greater Manchester:
