After the success of last year’s trip, the advanced manufacturing specialists from MIDAS along with graphene experts from the University of Manchester are visiting India this week to further build on the strengths between the two nations. The team will be meeting Indian businesses across a variety of sectors including aerospace, automotive and engineering in Pune, Manesar and Hyderabad.

The delegation is being led by the Department for International Trade (DIT) and will demonstrate how the rich history of collaboration between industry and academia in Manchester can transport the ideas of Indian businesses into commercial realities, such as light alloys, batteries and technical textiles. 

Create, test and optimise

The fabric of Manchester is woven through innovation and this clearly resonated when graphene was first isolated by Nobel peace prize winners, Andre Geim and Kostya Novoselov. Over £300m has been invested in industry-led innovation centres such as the National Graphene Institute (NGI), The Henry Royce Institute and the Graphene Engineering Innovation Centre (GEIC) – a centre where companies can create, test and optimise their products with advanced material experts.

Graphene now and in the future

Graphene is already being used by Innov8 who specialise in training footwear and Briggs Automotive Company, but now Ford in the US are the first mass-market automotive company to use graphene in an everyday vehicle – the F150 pick-up truck. Significant commercial benefits have been achieved by using just a small amount of graphene including cost savings, thermal dissipation qualities, lightweighting and noise reduction.

And as the world gears up for a low carbon future, the UK Government has highlighted that Manchester, with its graphene technology, is the ideal location for companies to capitalise on the global opportunity (£138 billion over three years) of lightweighting transport.
