Manchester India Partnership (MIP), a groundbreaking public-private partnership that aims to capitalise on global trade, tourism and academic opportunities between the two locations, was named Trade and Promotion Agency of the Year at the UK-India Awards 2019.

MIP was shortlisted alongside Trade and Invest Wales, London & Partners, techUK and the City of London Corporation to secure the title for the second year running. The award was presented at a star-studded ceremony in London on Friday 28 June.

The awards celebrate partnership between the UK and India, recognising the individuals and organisations leveraging their influence to strengthen bilateral business and cultural relationships; bringing together more than 300 global leaders, changemakers and influential figures from the business and public spheres in both locations.

In addition to this award, three of the MIP Board members – Jo Ahmed from Deloitte, Nimi Patel from Squire Patton Boggs and Lakshmi Kaul from Confederation of Indian Industries – were named among the 100 most influential women in UK India relations.

Andrew Cowan, CEO of Manchester Airport and MIP chair, said:

“To win this award for the second year running is recognition of the focus and energy being applied to further developing Greater Manchester’s relationship with India.

Having established the MIP less than 18 months ago, huge progress has been made on a number of fronts, including increased levels of trade and investment, a series of academic and research partnerships and several cultural and sporting collaborations, most recently the activity delivered around the historic India vs Pakistan Cricket World Cup fixture.

This agenda will continue to be a priority for the city region, as we look to strengthen and deepen our ties with one of the world’s most important economies.”

Since first securing the title in 2018, the MIP has continued to achieve success – most notably demonstrating the collaborative opportunities for £400m economic development between India and the North of England over the next five years in the “The Northern Powerhouse and India: Unlocking the Opportunity” report.

The awards formed part of UK-India Week (24-28 June) and were judges by an all-female panel of experts and Influential figures with leading roles in the UK-India international partnership.
