Council leader welcomes global survey as Manchester breaks into top 30 best cities

Categories: Latest News

Manchester has rocketed up the list of the best cities in the world to live in an annual report by The Economist.

The city is one of the biggest climbers in this year’s Global Liveability Index report produced by the Economist Intelligence Unit, rising 26 places to 28th position out of 172 world cities surveyed. Its position had dropped during the pandemic, due to national Covid restrictions and other impacts, but is now above pre-pandemic levels.

Assessed based on stability, healthcare, culture and environment, education and infrastructure, Manchester continue to place above London (which is in 33rd.) It also ranks above L.A. (37th), Auckland (34th), Madrid (43rd), Barcelona (35th), Adelaide (30th) and Perth (32.)

Council Leader Cllr Bev Craig:

“ I’m proud that Manchester is the highest ranked UK city. It’s great to see this respected survey recognise we already know – that Manchester is a great place to be: A vibrant, creative, energetic and ambitious city that puts residents at its heart.

“ But Manchester’s ambition doesn’t stop there. We are determined to become a top-flight world city and this analysis suggests we are making strong progress.

“ This is a brilliant city to live in, work in or visit but our goal is to make it even better – an exciting and innovative place where everyone can thrive and share in that success. We are proudly taking our place on a world stage and will strive to improve further.
