MIDAS, Manchester’s Inward Investment Agency will be representing Greater Manchester (GM) to showcase its core strengths in advanced materials and lightweight structures, at world-leading composites show JEC World in Paris, 3-5th May.

Major global companies along with innovative start-ups and other experts, academics, scientists, and R&D leaders in the field of composites will gather at Parc des Expositions de Villepinte to showcase the latest innovations using composite materials and discuss future growth of the industry.

Exhibiting as part of the Composites UK stand (R52), MIDAS is attending to promote how the city-region can support businesses in harnessing the commercial, environmental and world leading research opportunities of the UK’s Lightweight Structures opportunity.

Recognised by The Department of International Trade as the ideal location for lightweighting, GM provides businesses looking to invest with access to unrivalled expertise to meet the growing demand for stronger and lighter materials for our future automotive, aerospace and rail industries.

The home of graphene and 100 other advanced materials – the city has always been a pioneer in innovation and is known to be the world’s first industrial city with the first factories and industrial estates.

In 2004 The University of Manchester was home to a landmark moment in manufacturing history – when two researchers, Professor Andre Geim and Professor Kostya Novoselov isolated Graphene for the first time, for which they were awarded the Nobel Prize for Physics.

Since then, GM has built an eco-system to power research into Graphene to develop products and applications, collaborate on research and drive innovation in industries from energy and transport to healthcare and farming.

You will find this expertise at world leading institutes, with over £600 million invested into advanced materials assets including the National Graphene Institute (NGI) - the national centre and world leading facility for graphene research, The Graphene Engineering Innovation Centre (GEIC), that focuses on pilot production and commercialisation with industry partners, Print City a leading 3D additive and digital manufacturing centre, specialising in generative design and use of novel materials and The Henry Royce Institute which is the UK’s hub for Advanced Materials Research, and whose specialisms include 2D materials, advanced metals processing and atoms to devices – all of which are taking the world by storm.

MIDAS will be joined at JEC World by world-class graphene expert, Dr Vivek Koncherry, CEO UK and Europe of Graphene Innovations Inc Manchester.

Dr Vivek is a unique hybrid between the rigors of scientific research and pragmatic translation of real-world product innovation and applications. Some of Dr Vivek’s most recent work includes exploration into graphene-enhanced space habitat, developed to meet anticipated demand for human settlements.
