Shehla Hasan, Executive Director at the Manchester India Partnership said,

The Manchester India Partnership (MIP) welcomes the announcement of new commercial agreements to strengthen our trade and cultural relationship with India. Greater Manchester has a unique, and powerful connection with India. Whether the celebration of culture (through the upcoming South Asia Gallery), or the celebration of entrepreneurship (with the region being home to some of the world’s most successful entrepreneurs of Indian descent), trade and cultural relationships with india have long been a part of what makes this region successful.

India’s initiatives in key sectors including Digital, Clean Energy and Tourism align with Greater Manchester’s strengths in these areas and continue to create huge opportunities for investment, innovation and job creation for both partners. Hero cycles is a perfect example of how alignment of these goals has created significant opportunities. It’s recent announcement of a £150m investment into a new assembly line in Greater Manchester is fantastic news, creating new jobs and contributing towards a sustainable future.

Our long history of welcoming students from India is also extremely important, and we’re home to one of the largest Indian student communities in the UK. Our research partnerships with world-class Indian talent - with a particular interest in Graphene, is helping to create applications that will change lives.

India is an active inward investor into Greater Manchester and establishing direct connectivity between Manchester and India is one of our top priorities. We look forward to seeing this develop following the Prime Minister’s successful trip, as part of the 2030 roadmap.
