Manchester based leading international diagnostics group, Yourgene Health were well positioned to react quickly and effectively to the COVID-19 outbreak. Ramping up production at their state-of-the-art manufacturing facility at Citylabs in Manchester’s Science Park at the end of March, they were able to rapidly produce critical components of COVID-19 tests developed by Primerdesign, the molecular diagnostics division of Novacyt S.A with whom they had recently signed a manufacturing contract.

The company were able to plan effectively by monitoring the global spread of the infection from their operations in Asia and were able to immediately start manufacturing the PCR based COVID-19 assay – a molecular test for active infections.

In addition, the company recently announced that they are developing their own COVID test which will be launched late June. Yourgene have also launched a COVID-19 testing service from their laboratory in Citylabs. This service will support private testing demand where there are defined testing populations such as UK GP surgeries, private clinics and other corporate clients across UK.

Yourgene Health specialise in diagnostics for reproductive health and oncology for better clinical outcomes and after acquiring Elucigene Diagnostics in 2019, consolidated their business in Citylabs due to Greater Manchester’s thriving and well-connected molecular diagnostics ecosystem.

Jo Cross, Director of Marketing at Yourgene said:

"It is this unique Manchester community spirit coupled with a robust and well-connected infrastructure that has really enabled us to innovate and adapt in order to respond so rapidly to the crisis”

“We worked closely with Bruntwood and Manchester Science Park who were ahead of the curve and provided very upfront information about social distancing. Other companies such as Medlink, Bionow and MIDAS have also been very forthcoming in assisting with recruitment to build up our manufacturing resource in response to COVID.”

With communication at the heart of their new working set up, the team adapted well, especially considering the demand of medical diagnostics during the pandemic. The team underwent a rigorous programme of soft and cross training; site risk assessments were undertaken, and split shifts introduced to ensure maximum coverage and productivity along with ensuring key raw materials and remote technical support was available.

Yourgene Health has also expanded its laboratory capabilities to support the NHS in COVID-19 laboratory service testing and the team are ready and waiting to assist further, if necessary, in the global fight against COVID-19.
