COVID-19 is estimated to add £5.3 billion to the UK eCommerce industry in 2020 – taking it from £73.6bn to £78.9bn. Across the world, eCommerce is forecasted to account for almost 90% of global chain retail sales added this year.

This growth has been perfectly demonstrated in Manchester, UK – a city that boasts five homegrown online retail unicorns and is arguably the eCommerce capital of the UK.

Although well known for being home to leading fast fashion brands including Missguided, Boohoo and Pretty Little Thing, scratch the surface and you’ll find that Manchester’s eCommerce industry is much deeper and varied – with companies including AO, Fanatics International, The Hut Group, N Brown, AutoTrader, On the Beach, Booking.com, Amazon and MoneySuperMarket all operating out of the northern city.

MIDAS – Manchester’s economic development agency – has provided free, confidential and bespoke services to help many of these brands establish operations in Manchester, enabling the city to take pride of place at the forefront of the UK eCommerce industry.

MIDAS recently teamed up with IMRG – the UK’s online retail association – to speak to some of the city’s leading retailers to see what impact COVID-19 has had on the industry and determine the ways online and traditional retailers can thrive post-pandemic.
