An event to mark the opening of a new NHS medical centre - New Jackson Medical Centre - took place on Tuesday 6th June, between leading property developer, Renaker, and key leaders from NHS Greater Manchester Integrated Care and Manchester City Council.

New Jackson Medical Centre is located in the southern end of Deansgate in the city centre, on the ground and first floors of Elizabeth Tower. The 8,000 sq ft Medical Centre will be operated by the NHS and will offer much-needed accessible primary health and care services for Manchester residents and the local community, as well as a wide range of community health services along with ultrasound and dermatology services.

Opening to the public on 19th June, New Jackson is the first medical centre to open in the city centre since 2009, and will house three additional GP practices; Cornbrook, The Docs, and The Vallance. Offering more appointments to meet growing local demand, patients will be able to access the services at New Jackson Medical Centre as well as other locations where those practices provide care.

Funded with the help of a £2.6m grant from Manchester City Council and £1m from NHS England, New Jackson Medical Centre houses 16 clinical rooms and will eventually be able to serve more than 20,000 patients. The building’s green credentials are consistent with both the NHS Greater Manchester Integrated Care and Greater Manchester Combined Authority’s commitment to achieve a net zero carbon footprint by 2038.

The opening of the NHS medical centre marks an exciting step in the wider regeneration of the new neighbourhood which Renaker is creating, located near Deansgate in the southern end of the city centre. This new neighbourhood will comprise more than 7,000 high quality new homes, as well as an adjacent the new 210-place Crown Street Primary School, operated by Laurus Trust, due to open September 2024. In addition, the neighbourhood will deliver a new city centre park with a children's play area, a public car park (391 spaces), and a variety of leisure and health amenities including a dental studio, a health clinic, as well as a number of local and independent shops, restaurants, bars, and a cookery school. Progress is well under way with more than 2,100 new homes already delivered in the area, 850 currently under construction, and 4,000+ in the pipeline.

The creation of this new neighbourhood by Renaker also supports Manchester City Council’s wider ambition of continued population growth within the city and the demand for quality and low-carbon homes, close to transport hubs. It is important that local services are developed at the same time, particularly in the city where they previously did not exist, in this case New

Jackson Medical Centre and Crown Street Primary School, in order to meet the needs of residents and the local community.

Daren Whitaker, Founder & Chairman of Renaker, said:

"We are proud to be leading the transformation of this new city centre district, as well as helping to meet Manchester City Council’s wider ambition of developing high-quality homes and amenities in the city centre. New Jackson Medical Centre, alongside Crown Street Primary School which we are also developing, are part of the extensive amenity we are providing to residents and the local community. The ambition for this area is to create a sustainable neighbourhood for the long-term, and we are proud to be delivering the much-needed infrastructure to enable people to call the city centre their home."

Cllr Bev Craig, Leader of Manchester City Council, said:

‘’Manchester city centre continues to thrive and grow, a testament to Manchester’s reputation as a great place to live, work and invest. We want to keep building new, exciting, and family-friendly neighbourhoods with the services residents need. From the outset this has been a priority in the iconic Great Jackson Street area and, by working with the developer, Renaker, the City Council has been able to deliver a new school and a new medical practice that will serve residents across the city.”

Dr Manisha Kumar, Chief Medical Officer for NHS Greater Manchester Integrated Care, said:

“We’re absolutely delighted to bring this new medical centre to the growing community within Manchester city centre and to be able to gradually free up capacity for members of the existing practices.

“It is important to provide as much choice and flexibility as possible and I’m pleased that city centre residents who currently use the existing practices should now get the choice of using either practice site, depending on their needs.

“Alongside the school and park, we’re pleased to be able to provide some of the infrastructure required to enable Manchester to continue its growth. It is the first of a number of new primary care developments for Manchester in the coming years.”

New Jackson Medical Centre will be officially open to the public from Monday 19th June, from 8am until 6.30pm Monday to Friday – with the eventual aim to be operational seven days a week along with extended hours including evenings and weekends to meet the needs of the population.
